WOYWW #427: A New Junk Journal

Happy WOYWW #427! If you'd like to learn about this fun blog hop, you may follow this link HERE. I can hardly wait to see what my fellow deskers have been up to this week. I may be a bit late in responding to some, as it is quite late for me here in the U.S. at this moment. I hope you'll bear with me.

Kerry of Kerrymay Makes recently issued a Junk Journal Challenge for the month of August at G+ and at Instagram. That Instagram page may be found by following this link HERE. Kerry's blog may be found by following this second link HERE

(How come Blogger is making all of the letters of the links suddenly so oversized?)

Anyway, as fools really will rush in even when there are a million and one other things to attend to, I've decided to blog along as time permits and then post in the G+ group entitled All Things Mixed Media Art. I've also broken my one time a month WOYWW rule by joining in this time. As time permits, I will be answering any comments left here by anyone interested.

Kerry asks that we mention our chosen materials. This post is about making the starting point for my Junk Journal, so here are a few notes and photos of it in progress, including my materials used thus far.

I started by removing the text block from a used hard cover book that had a sewn binding. I then altered the cover, both outside and inside. I began with the outside first, as I knew it would be messier.

Once the wrinkled tissue paper had adhered to the used book cover, I covered it using some Liquitex Brown Gesso, a chocolate-y, lovely way to begin. Then I switched to Mod Podge for a medium rather than the Liquitex Heavy Matte Gel Medium I'd already used as a glue. To make small batches of shimmery spatter color, I chose a formula of either Perfect Pearls Copper Metallic or Winsor and Newton Iridescent Watercolor Medium with a bit of perfect Pearls Pearl color powder. This last pairing of materials is what gave me the bright metallic white you see here:

The coral/orange splatters are a mixture of Iridescent Watercolor Medium + Daniel Smith Pyrrol (sp?) Orange Watercolor paint. As already mentioned in an earlier blogpost, I'm giving myself permission to make messier art than usual for the entire year. I'm beginning to relax into this now, and am wondering whether or not to continue forward into 2018 with the same attitude.

Top coat following some drying time: gloss original Mod Podge mixed with a bit of water and some Perfect Pearls Metallic Copper powder. After this had all dried, I coated it lightly using Microglaze by Judikins. Then, I lined the inside side using some old scrapbooking papers I'd been keeping without using for about 10 years. (I know - I'm a bit of a packrat!)

And here is what it looks like standing up on one of the 2 scrapbook paper collection books I've been keeping since forever. No "innards" for it when the picture was taken.

And here are some of the pages I've chosen to make the book ready for use. Note the older scrapbook papers and the "oops!" prints, all destined at one point or another for the waste basket. Note: I am still debating which kind of binding to use, but that will be for a later post.

My thanks to Kerry of Kerrymay Makes for this fun August challenge! And Happy WOYWW #427 to my fellow deskers !!!

    1. Hi Helen! That brown gesso makes me think of chocolate every single time. It's almost fudge-like. Liquitex used to make it. I have not been able to find any online today, more's the pity. But I would imagine that to tint regular gesso using something as heavily pigmented as, say, a very deep brown tube watercolor might work. My bottle is VERY old - 10 years old!

  3. My son and his friend came over and asked if i woudl help them make a journal, we all made one called them 'a love story' they were immersed in their creativity and were beaming with joy at creating their won sketch book projects...both are all grown up now, but still love to sit at our table and do the same things we did when they were knee high to grasshoppers. love your journal too... dxxx #19

  4. Lovely junk journal, Rose and I'm so glad you were able to make WOYWW this week! You'll have a ton of fun filling those pages - or if you're like me - you'll finish one or two spreads and move straight onto making more journals LOL. Sometimes I feel making journals is more fun than filling them! I have a dozen journals with just one or two spreads completed or none! I think I've only ever completed one journal from cover to cover (apart from my two LifeBooks) zsuzsa #23

Lololz I also enjoy making books more than using them. Aren't we funny? Lolz I myself have filled a couple of books. Part of the problem is that I might perhaps have a different theme for one that calls to me only once in a while. I guess that I've been in the very slow snail-like process of altering a mountaineering book entitled, "No Impossible Ways" for over a decade now. I have no excuse whatsoever for this slowness. Hmmmmm....maybe we could start a club of bookmaking fanciers who never complete journals?

  17. What a beautiful book, Rose. I love the idea of upcycling and old book like this, and giving it a whole new lease of life. All the oops pages inside are great too! Thank you for your visit and your lovely comment - I'm glad you like our pretty kitties! We love them more with each passing day. I am not worried about tomorrow's appointment and trust my surgeon to do the right thing, and just have to hope for the best for now!

    1. Hi again, Shoshi! I know what you mean about upcycling. Your kitties really are very cute! Just imagine it- when you get back from that appointment, there'll be kitties there to greet you. I once had to have emergency surgery, and it was my little sweet 4 footed friend who guarded me and stuck by me as I was recovering. She even knew where things hurt most - that was where she would cuddle me!
      Don't you simply LOVE cats?

  18. Happy WOYWW. Thank you for your visit to my blog earlier. Your junk journal already looks fabulous. 1. Awww thanks so much, Ali! I used to trade all over the place (internationally as well as nationally, all by mail) until it just got to be overwhelming. I had to stop trading altogether. Maybe one day I may try once more, but for now my time's fully occupied - just like yours is. xo

  19. Hi Rose. Before I forget you mentioned the tags you could see. I think I have shown them at some time but will try and remember and open them on my desk next week. 1. Angela I don't normally doWOYWW each week, preferring doing only final Wednesdays of every month. But I will keep in mind your comment and try and make an effort to stop on by and see the goodies!
You see, I've never really done much with tags other than my freebies at Plush Possum Studio (my other blog) but now that I am working on a junk Journal, I think it is high time that I began learning what it takes to make some cute tags!
      See you then!

I keep thinking of how best to bind that book. 2 techniques interest me: tying and stitching. I will be looking at a few other ideas for binding as time permits. I may end up needing time off from WOYWWs again for a few weeks, but promise to post as allowed to by by end of summer busy time schedule.

  21. I love journalling and really should start to make my own as you have. Lovely job too - I like the idea of the balled up tissue for the cover first layer, love doing things like that for the texture.
Have a good week playing with journalling.

    1. Hi Neet ! Lololz :-D I think that I may have outdone you in the wordiness department this week, though! Lolz That balled up tissue could end up being a page technique for some other projects down the road. I am a creature of habit but who can get bored with those habits! Perhaps I bore myself and need to keep a fresh outlook?
      Trying new things is good!
      ;)
P.S. I just tried repurposing an advert envelope with a window in it. For that, I used 2 kinds of glitter + clear embossing powder. It still needs work. I call that "playing with journaling," wouldn't you?
